These words are referring to a series of events in the life of Jesus that took place in the presence of his disciples.[2] Whether or not the resurrection of Jesus was included in this list of “signs,” it is clear that this text wants us to understand more about Jesus, who is the “truth” and “light,” than we are willing to acknowledge. This passage has proven so significant to John’s theology that it has later emerged as the primary source in Martin Luther’s concept of the catholicity of the church.[3]\n\nThese hidden truths were often kept in this Gospel because John, the beloved disciple, may have sensed that Jesus’ life and work would bear significantly on the life of the church.[4] It is important to note that these truths were hidden, not buried. Jesus’ prophetic warnings about his own crucifixion and Easter resurrection have not been falsified by the subsequent decisions of the Roman Empire, nor will they be falsified in the coming resurrection of the elect.
