In the current study, we examined the effect of visual search and planning ability on the execution of a simple task-based planning task, involving three levels of WM capacity and modulated by the presence or absence of a distractor object. In one-step tasks, participants performed an arbitrary movement of a virtual object. Participants were asked to plan and execute a movement at a later time based on the verbal instruction (\"reach\") given at the beginning of the experiment. Performance in the presence of a distracting object was impaired, but only for participants with a low WM capacity. Interestingly, planning ability was also significantly influenced by the presence of distractors, with planning ability decreasing as WM capacity increased. Furthermore, we manipulated the cue used to plan the action in a target-based experimental condition and found that performance in this condition was modulated by WM capacity, visual search ability, and planning ability. Our findings underscore the need to consider the environment and its effect on planning ability and WM capacity when examining plan execution and the potential influence of WM capacity and planning ability on performance of complex social and/or cognitive activities.
