A multidisciplinary approach is employed in the study of cerebrovascular response in control, global ischemic, and focal ischemic conditions. The response is assessed with regard to its temporal relationship with the onset of global and focal cerebral ischemia. The effects of pharmacological agents and blood pressure manipulations on the response to global and focal ischemia are investigated. Regional blood flow, cerebral blood volume, and oxygen delivery are used to assess the microvascular response. Both biochemical and histological studies are conducted in order to gain insight into the mechanism of microvascular response to ischemia. These studies will provide information about the cerebral microcirculation and will provide a better understanding of the relationship between cerebral blood flow, blood volume, and metabolism during global and focal ischemia.
