And now the agency's top official has stepped down.\n\nBut we can still take a look behind the scenes at what's going on, with NPR's Allison Aubrey.\n\n\"You know, you're going to have some people say we shouldn't do the interview,\" she says.\n\n\"We're taking the risk of doing this. We can't allow this to be a cover-up. We have to do our job.\"\n\nSo Allison heads to Washington with the understanding that in speaking to Thomas J. Donohue, Postmaster General, she may cross a line. \"The government's public record is sacrosanct,\" she says. \"We understand that.\"\n\n\"Essentially,\" she says, \"we're going to get our questions answered with the facts.\"\n\nDonohue confirmed that \"the questioners' information will be placed in the public domain.\" That will include the questioners' names.\n\nDonohue also spoke of an issue that's been brought to our attention since the interview: The mail system's sustainability.\n\n\"There will always be a need for a postal system that delivers mail,\" Donohue says. \"Every day, millions of Americans use their mail to send their children to school, have their check from their employment, to pay their rent and their mortgage, to get their utilities turned on, to pay their taxes, to have their paychecks and their checks from retail establishments. To live.\n\n\"The key word there is 'always.' We're going to have that need. We can't say it's going to be essential, but we're going to have that need.\n\n\"What we're trying to do is make sure that we're successful, and find a way to make this a profitable enterprise, to make sure the taxpayers' money is well spent.\"\n\nAs always, Allison is listening.\n\n\"Just in this letter that Tom Donohue sent to all of the postmasters last week,\" she reports, \"he talks about the need for a profitable corporation.
