In the diffraction by parallel beam, the crystallographic orientation of a crystal can be quantified by the shift of the radial intensity distribution due to the relative positions of the crystal and the detector. To extract the diffraction pattern shift, the background correction for the diffraction by the parallel beam is first made. Then, a novel deconvolution technique based on the principles of the Fourier slice theorem is introduced to calculate the crystal orientation directly from the shifted diffraction pattern and the magnitudes of the beam shift components. This method has been successfully applied to three representative single-crystal materials: LiF, NaNbO3, and ZnO. Crystal phases such as single crystal, polycrystal, and composite single crystals have been studied. The crystal orientation of six unknown unknown single crystal samples has been reliably identified through the treatment of the diffraction patterns.
