The New Media Caucus is a project of the University of California, Berkeley and these campuses’ Graduate School of Journalism:  Community Structure Affects the Bacterial Community Composition of Endodontic Biomaterials.\n                                                                                                        The aim of this study was to analyze the bacterial communities of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and two other endodontic biomaterials from the same manufacturer (gray MTA [GMTA], white MTA [WMTA]), using a high-throughput sequencing approach. A commercial endodontic biomaterial can be treated as a material with a primary bacterial reservoir. Therefore, it is of great importance to know what bacterial species are present and in what quantity within such a reservoir. Five groups of premolar teeth (n = 10 each) were instrumented, and root canals were filled with either WMTA, GMTA, or MTA. The periapical area of each tooth was sampled before and after instrumentation. The samples were cultured according to a standardized protocol and the bacterial communities of the different biomaterials were analyzed by using 454 pyrosequencing.
