A successful call returns \n`{\"data\": ..., \"meta\": ...}`; every failure returns `{\"error\": ...}` with a stable `code`. Errors are never charged.\n\nThis collection has a request for each of the 307 capabilities in 23 families, plus the PDF job routes. Each request carries the documented example body, a table of its body parameters, its credit cost and the errors it can return, and a saved example response captured from the live engine with a sandbox key.\n\n**Run it in Postman.** Import the collection and an environment (Sandbox or Live), select the environment and paste your key into `api_key`. Use a sandbox key (`sk_test_...`) while you explore: calls are not charged. Every request sends `Authorization: Bearer {{api_key}}` (set once on the collection) and a fresh `Idempotency-Key`.\n\nGenerated from the OpenAPI document, version 1.0.0-preview: [https://developers.96astro.com/openapi/v1.json](https://developers.96astro.com/openapi/v1.json). Full documentation: [https://developers.96astro.com/docs](https://developers.96astro.com/docs).\n\n## Base URL & sandbox\n\n``` text\nhttps://api.96astro.com/v1\n\n ```\n\nEvery capability is `POST /v1/{family}/{capability}` with a JSON body. There is one base URL: the key decides the environment, and a key works only in its own environment.\n\n| Key prefix | Environment | Charged | Use it for |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| `sk_test_` | Sandbox | No | Development and CI: real calculations, up to 500 calls a day |\n| `sk_live_` | Live | Yes | Production traffic |\n\nSandbox limits, per organization over the last 24 hours (`429 quota_exhausted` when reached): 500 calls; 20 AI readings, fast tier only; 5 PDF jobs. The two Postman environments differ only in the key you paste into them.\n\n## Authentication\n\nEvery request is authenticated with an API key sent in a **header**. Keys are never accepted in the URL, so they cannot leak into server logs, proxies or browser history.\n\n``` http\nAuthorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY\n\n ```\n\n`X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY` is accepted as an alternative for clients that cannot set `Authorization`. In this collection the Bearer token is `{{api_key}}`, set once at collection level and inherited by every request (the PDF download link needs no key).\n\n- **Shown once.** Only a fingerprint is stored, never the key itself. If you lose a key, rotate it.\n \n- **Named, per project.** Give each integration its own key, so revoking one never breaks another. Every key belongs to a project of your organization and counts toward its usage and budget.\n \n- **Rotation.** Create the new key, deploy it, then revoke the old one. Both work during the changeover. Revocation takes effect immediately.\n \n- **Keep keys on your server.** A key inside a mobile app, a single-page app or a WordPress theme can be extracted by anyone. Have your app call your server, and your server call the API.\n \n\n## Requests and responses\n\nRequests are `POST` with a JSON body (`Content-Type: application/json`); responses are JSON. Send the **local** date and time as ISO 8601 without an offset, plus an **IANA time-zone name**:\n\n``` json\n{ \"datetime\": \"1990-10-18T14:30:00\", \"timezone\": \"Asia/Kolkata\", \"latitude\": 28.6139, \"longitude\": 77.209 }\n\n ```\n\nThe offset is resolved for that exact date, including historical changes and daylight saving. An ambiguous or non-existent local time returns `422 ambiguous_local_time` listing the valid choices. If you only have a fixed offset, send `\"utc_offset\": \"+05:30\"` instead of `timezone`. `latitude` and `longitude` are decimal degrees, north and east positive.\n\n| Setting | Default | Notes |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| `ayanamsha` | `lahiri` | Sidereal capabilities. KP capabilities always use the Krishnamurti ayanamsha |\n| `house_system` | per capability | Western capabilities take `P` Placidus (the default), `K` Koch, `W` whole sign or `E` equal. KP capabilities always use Placidus cusps |\n| `node` | `true` | `true` (osculating) or `mean` lunar node, on chart capabilities |\n\nAn unsupported value is rejected with `422`; the API never silently substitutes a default.\n\n### Response envelope\n\nEvery successful response has the same shape:\n\n``` json\n{\n \"data\": { },\n \"meta\": {\n \"request_id\": \"req_6e985a89a166b73ea220\",\n \"api_version\": \"v1\",\n \"credits_used\": 3,\n \"warnings\": [],\n \"language\": \"en\"\n }\n}\n\n ```\n\n| `meta` field | Present | Meaning |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| `request_id` | Always | Identifies the call (`req_` and 20 hex characters). Also in the `X-Request-Id` header of every response, including errors. |\n| `api_version` | Always | Always `v1`. |\n| `credits_used` | Always | Credits charged for this call (0 for a sandbox key). |\n| `warnings` | Always | Notes on the answer, such as the reason a value is `null`. `[]` when there are none. |\n| `language` | When it applies | The language the output is written in: the `language` asked for (one the capability supports), `en` by default. |\n| `ai` | When it applies | Present on AI readings: `provider`, `model`, `tier`, `input_tokens` and `output_tokens`. |\n| `labels` | When it applies | Present when the request sent `labels`: `language`, `quality` and `terms`. |\n| `replayed` | When it applies | Present when this is a stored response replayed for a repeated Idempotency-Key. |\n\n- **Lists are arrays** of objects with named fields, never objects keyed `\"0\"`, `\"1\"`.\n \n- **Missing versus empty.** `[]` means the calculation ran and found nothing; `null` means a value does not apply, with the reason in `meta.warnings`.\n \n- **Dates** in responses are ISO 8601 with an explicit offset.\n \n- Each request's saved example response is one real response, trimmed for size; another response may omit a field, set it to `null` or carry more items.\n \n\n## Error codes\n\nErrors use standard HTTP status codes and one JSON shape:\n\n``` json\n{\n \"error\": {\n \"code\": \"invalid_request\",\n \"message\": \"Input should be less than or equal to 90\",\n \"field\": \"latitude\",\n \"request_id\": \"req_6e985a89a166b73ea220\",\n \"retryable\": false\n }\n}\n\n ```\n\nProgram against `code`, which is stable. `message` is for people and may change. `field` names the input at fault, or is `null` when no single field is. **You are never charged for an error.**\n\n| HTTP status | Code | Meaning and what to do | Retryable | Charged |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| 400 | `invalid_request` | The body is not valid JSON, the `Idempotency-Key` is too long, or the key was sent in the URL. Fix the request. | No | No |\n| 401 | `invalid_key` | The API key is missing, invalid or revoked. Check or rotate the key; do not retry in a loop. | No | No |\n| 401 | `expired_key` | The API key has expired. Rotate the key; do not retry in a loop. | No | No |\n| 402 | `payment_required` | Your plan's payment is overdue past its grace period. Pay it in the dashboard; sandbox keys keep working. | No | No |\n| 403 | `account_suspended` | The account is not active. Contact support. | No | No |\n| 404 | `not_found` | There is no such capability, job or file, or it is not yours. | No | No |\n| 409 | `idempotency_conflict` | The same `Idempotency-Key` was used with a different body (use a new key), is more than 24 hours old (use a new key), or its first request is still in progress. | Only while the first request is in progress (`retryable: true`): retry shortly with the same key | No |\n| 410 | `link_expired` | A PDF download link has expired. Poll the job for a fresh link. | No | No |\n| 410 | `file_expired` | The PDF is no longer kept. Create a new PDF job. | No | No |\n| 413 | `payload_too_large` | The request body is larger than 1 MiB. Reduce the request size. | No | No |\n| 422 | `invalid_request` | The input failed validation. `field` names the problem. | No | No |\n| 422 | `unsupported_language` | `language` (or `labels`) names a language this capability does not support; the error's `supported` lists the ones it takes. | No | No |\n| 422 | `ambiguous_local_time` | The local time is ambiguous (clocks went back) or does not exist (clocks went forward); the error lists the valid choices. | No | No |\n| 422 | `unsupported_option` | An option value this capability does not support. The API never silently substitutes a default. | No | No |\n| 429 | `rate_limited` | The plan's rate limit is reached. Wait for `Retry-After` seconds, then retry. | Yes, after `Retry-After` | No |\n| 429 | `quota_exhausted` | No credits left, or a sandbox daily limit was reached. Top up, upgrade or wait for renewal. | No | No |\n| 429 | `spend_cap_reached` | Your opt-in overage has reached the monthly spending cap you set (or this call would pass it). Raise the cap or buy a top-up in Billing, or wait for the next period. | No | No |\n| 429 | `project_budget_exceeded` | The key's project has used its monthly credit budget (or this call would pass it). An owner or admin can raise it under Projects; it resets on the 1st of the month (UTC). | No | No |\n| 500 | `computation_failed` | The calculation failed on our side. | Yes, with the same idempotency key | No |\n| 501 | `not_yet_available` | The capability is in the catalogue but not callable on /v1 yet. | No | No |\n| 502 | `unavailable` | The calculation service returned an unusable answer. | Yes, with exponential backoff and jitter | No |\n| 503 | `unavailable` | The calculation service is temporarily unavailable or overloaded. | Yes, after `Retry-After`, with backoff | No |\n| 504 | `deadline_exceeded` | The calculation took too long. | Yes, with backoff | No |\n\nRetry only when `retryable` is `true`, with exponential backoff and jitter, and send an `Idempotency-Key` on every request so a retry after a network timeout can never charge twice.\n\n## Rate limits & credits\n\nEach successful call uses credits from your plan; errors are never charged and sandbox keys never use credits. Each plan also has a **rate limit in units per second**, shared by every key of your organization (live and sandbox are counted apart). Plans (price book 2026-10-draft-1, provisional):\n\n| Plan | Credits a month | Rate limit (units/second) |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Trial | 5,000 (14-day trial) | 2 |\n| Starter | 50,000 | 5 |\n| Growth | 150,000 | 10 |\n| Business | 500,000 | 20 |\n| Enterprise | Custom | Custom |\n\nA call's credits and rate-limit units follow its compute class, shown on every request:\n\n| Compute class | Credits per call | Rate-limit units |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Light | 1 | 1 |\n| Standard | 1 | 1 |\n| Heavy | 3 | 3 |\n| Report | 10 | 10 |\n| AI reading | Metered (below) | 10 |\n\n**AI readings** are metered by the model's usage: the tier's ceiling is reserved before the call and only what was used is charged (18,500 credits per US$1 of model cost, never less than the tier minimum).\n\n| AI tier | Minimum | Ceiling | Typical |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Fast | 15 | 300 | 60 to 170 |\n| Balanced | 60 | 1,000 | 250 to 750 |\n| Deep | 180 | 5,000 | 1,500 to 4,000 |\n\n**PDF reports** (`POST /v1/jobs/pdf`) cost the report's own credits plus 120.\n\nThe rate limit is also the burst, and the allowance refills continuously at the plan's rate. Successful responses report the state in units:\n\n``` http\nRateLimit-Limit: 10\nRateLimit-Remaining: 7\nRateLimit-Reset: 1\n\n ```\n\nExceeding the limit returns `429 rate_limited` with a `Retry-After` header. Running out of credits returns `429 quota_exhausted`, never a surprise bill: top up, upgrade, wait for renewal or turn on capped overage. Other limits: 10 AI readings a minute per key. The published rates are provisional until measured on production hardware.\n\n## Idempotency\n\nSend a unique `Idempotency-Key` header with each request (this collection sends `{{$guid}}`, a new UUID per send):\n\n- **Same key and same body** within 24 hours returns the original result, marked `meta.replayed: true` and the `Idempotent-Replayed: true` header, and you are charged once.\n \n- **Same key with a different body** returns `409 idempotency_conflict`.\n \n- **Same key while the first request is still running** returns `409 idempotency_conflict` with `retryable: true`. It never runs twice; retry shortly with the same key.\n \n- **A failed first attempt** was not charged, so a retry with the same key and body runs again.\n \n- After **24 hours** the key expires and returns `409 idempotency_conflict`; use a new one.\n \n\nIdempotency protects against duplicate charges from retries. It is not a cache: a new request for the same chart, with a new key, is a new call.\n\n## Languages & labels\n\n**`language`****.** Each capability lists the languages it answers in: the `language` enum in its body-parameter table (and `x-languages` in the OpenAPI document). Today 4 capabilities, the AI readings, answer in 26 languages; every calculation and report answers in English. A language a capability does not support is refused with `422 unsupported_language`, and the error's `supported` lists what it takes. `meta.language` states the language of the answer. Field names, IDs, enum values and numbers never change with language: only display text does.\n\n**`labels`** (optional, free, on any capability). Send `\"labels\": \"hi\"` and `data` stays exactly as in English, while `meta.labels.terms` maps each sign, planet, nakshatra, tithi, yoga and other term in `data` to its name in that language. Show `terms[value] ?? value`, and keep comparing against the English value. Explanatory sentences are not translated.\n\n| Quality | Codes | What you get |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| `curated` | `as` `bn` `gu` `hi` `kn` `ml` `mr` `ne` `or` `pa` `ta` `te` `ur` | The terms that language's own panchangs and Jyotish books print (13 Indian languages) |\n| `transliterated` | `si` | The Sanskrit term written in the language's script |\n| `partial` | `de` `es` `fr` `it` `ko` `nl` `pl` `pt` `ru` `tr` | Native zodiac, planet and weekday names; other terms are left out, so show the English |\n\nAI readings are written by a language model in the language you ask for; the text is machine-written and has not been reviewed by native speakers, and no label pack has been reviewed by native speakers yet.\n\n## SDKs\n\nEvery SDK method and every request in this collection is generated from the same OpenAPI document, with the same names.\n\n| | TypeScript / JavaScript | Python |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Package | `@96astro/api` | `astro96-api` (import `astro96_api`) |\n| Runtime | Node.js 18+ (and other runtimes with `fetch`), zero dependencies | Python 3.9+, sync and `asyncio` clients on `httpx` |\n\nMethods follow the URL: `POST /v1/{family}/{capability}` is `client.family.capability()` (`astro.vedicCharts.planetPositions()` in TypeScript, `astro.vedic_charts.planet_positions()` in Python). The clients add retries with backoff, an `Idempotency-Key` on every POST, typed errors and PDF job helpers. Both SDKs are built and tested but not yet on npm or PyPI: until they are, contact support for a pre-release package, or call the API over plain HTTP.
