The attack has already started to slow down in intensity. A New York Times article report by John Markoff explained that attackers started asking for hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin as ransom for halting the attack.

PayPal was the first target of the attack. Its system was reported to be been slow down for more than 20 hours now.

The attacker's main motive behind it was to get the attention of authorities to crack down on anonymous online activities. It appears that they have succeeded. The FBI also issued a press release that they were monitoring the attacks and other online criminal activities by people who operated under the anonymous Tor service.

While the attack is still ongoing, Anonymous made a post claiming responsibility for the DDoS attack. This post was published under a new Twitter handle called @OpLastResort.

Anonymous gave six points as to why it launched DDoS attacks.

For some time now, we have been campaigning for the repeal of the anti-anonymous legislation pending in the U.S. Congress, the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC). We also see this as an opportunity to bring these issues to the public to further awareness. The attack was timed to coincide with the vote to prohibit such legislation and the mass media talking about it.

Our intention was to make it uncomfortable for corporate users to log in anonymously, therefore out of respect for them, we have been doing this in the more public areas of our projects. Despite this, we find it unacceptable that Firefox users can't be anonymous on our own site. For this reason, we will continue to do this until the browser is fixed.

We have also been busy working on new projects. We have been seeing the need for new tools and processes to bypass the anti-anonymous legislative proposals. We have been designing such projects and evaluating different options.
