She gets a job as a 'lobbyist' and is given a soapbox to stand on and a speech to make to the workers. She goes to make a powerful and passionate speech to them, but out of nowhere an industrial machine gun goes off and cuts off one of her legs. She crawls away as she watches the other workers and management walk around her as if she wasn't there. \"Soapbox\" is an allegorical story about the yearning for power over others that characterises fascist regimes.
\n
\"My speech was to win back the rights we had lost, but I was cut down by those who started making soap out of our skin while we stood there watching.
\n
\"I didn't realise until much later that they made soap out of the skin of those who spoke in favour of worker rights. And that is the real story of fascist regimes.\"
\n
Allegory as allegory, a comment on the worker's movement in South Africa in the latter part of the 20th Century.
\n
That's one of the beautiful things about reading the Virago Great Lives series: the writers commit to making sure you can follow the path of the characters from one book to the next without having read the book before. In some of the Virago Great Lives, like Henry Adams in America, that turns out to be a problem, although David, Faber's editor, told me that his boss thought that the non-readers should be the readers -- as long as the reading was informed by the other books in the series.
\n
Anyway, I've read the story now. I still think it's a mistake to claim that the allegory is 'about' fascism, and part of me gets the distinct feeling that this particular book is so insistent about this allegory being about fascism, that it is trying very hard to convince us that it is, when it is really not.
\n
You can read the story in full on the Virago website, which has excellent illustrations by Scott Wyer and other design work by Nancy Holt. The introductions are by the influential critic Martin Stannard.
