\nI'm using C# to create some basic multiplayer combat video games. \nI have a list of player positions(x and y) and I want to perform an \"overlap test\" for every player. \nI need to know which player(s) might overlap.\nOne could run over all the x and y values at once and test if 2 points are in some way overlapping, but this is very inefficient - especially for a multiplayer game with a large number of players.\nI have come up with an algorithm to reduce the problem size to something more managable:
\nEach player in turn picks up the other players x and y coords.\nI create a list of player ids I've seen so far, and add both their x and y coords to this list.\nI create a new list with all coords that have not been added to this list so far.\nSort the new list by player id, then by x.\nNow, I put my head down and add all new coords to this list.

That way you only need to sort one item (the list of near-duplicates) on an insert/update rather than on a full query. You can use HashSet to ensure that the computation does not need to duplicate the data more than necessary.
