\nJohn R. Ewart (1917 - 1987) was a British painter and draughtsman, and a friend of the writer and critic Roger Fry.
\nEwart was born in Edinburgh in 1917, the son of a ship-owner. He took an MA at the University of Glasgow in 1938, and won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London from 1938 to 1940. At the outbreak of World War II he joined the Royal Air Force, but continued to paint.
\nEwart first met the aesthete and writer Roger Fry in June 1937, and the two of them became friends. They took a house together near Goodge Street, in north London, and Ewart was admitted as a pupil of Fry's Foundation School in 1938. In his later years, Ewart lived in Streatham, south London.
\nIn the 1930s and 1940s Ewart published his own art magazine, The Phantasy Studio, which was edited by A.F. Wood from about 1940 to 1945. A friend of the writer E.M. Forster, Ewart and his wife Suzanne, who was an artist, lived at Upper Forest, Forster's country place near Baldock.
\nEwart's wife Suzanne died in 1977; he remained an active artist until his death in 1987.
