\nLOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- As Sunday's 84th Academy Awards approached, the mood in Hollywood continued to be colored by drama on and off the red carpet.
\nThe drama that has characterized the Golden Globes, a showpiece for film, continued unabated as actress Sandra Bullock split a full sweat ahead of Sunday's Oscars ceremony. And no one seemed ready to rule anything out when it comes to who will ultimately take home the Academy's coveted best-picture prize.
\nThe contenders:
\nThe success of 2008's best picture, \"Slumdog Millionaire,\" may seem like a given, but it's not. The question now facing Hollywood is whether a longer film or a more ambitious project will help the film win best picture. Will voters favor \"The Dark Knight\" and \"The King's Speech\" or \"Inception\" and \"Avatar\"?
\nEven if the audience knows the answer, the academy might not.
\nVoting on the best picture Oscar begins at 4 p.m. ET Sunday, before the awards ceremony (7 p.m. ET) kicks off at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

\nConcerns about the future of the Oscars are still being fought by Hollywood's most powerful -- including DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is in Cannes, France, this week looking for a worldwide distributor for \"The Book of Eli.\" And Warner Bros.'
