\nDuring the meeting Monday evening, DiMento told the council to put a “pause” on the sale of alcohol after 10 p.m. until a problem with intoxicated, underage adults roaming the streets is addressed.
\nDiMento cited a couple of examples: an Aug. 7 incident where he found his daughter at a convenience store after midnight with a man who was “very intoxicated.” Another example, on July 30, where he found his sister with a man at University Avenue and South Main Street that was later found to be a minor.
\nHe also brought up the fact that on Aug. 7, while on his way to the college, his 11-year-old son reported to him that an intoxicated young man in the parking lot of a utility trailer at a nearby company had been molesting himself.
\n“He got sick and was throwing up and the gentleman was still there,” DiMento said.
\nThe council discussed the idea with police, who explained the legalities of the proposal, including the state’s right to freedom of religion, said DiMento.
\n“This isn’t an issue of the 1st amendment,” said Councilor Sam Hawley. “This is a safety issue that we need to address.”
\nCouncilor Michael Buonocore said he found it troubling that while DiMento was taking on “a topic of national interest,” he didn’t think the council should be addressing it.
\n“This isn’t a matter of freedom of religion, this is a matter of ‘someone caught with a beer in their hands,” Buonocore said. “Are you going to be drinking in the common areas of this city?”
