Yet no elementary theory of quarks exists; this must be constructed on a mathematical basis. The first attempt to construct such a theory is presented in this work; it has been developed together with the first author since 1980. This work is based on the well-developed theory of elementary particles in QCD (quantum chromodynamics). This theory's mathematical foundations are very solid and trustworthy, and they have guided us during the last 25 years towards a rather complete solution of the construction problem. The old 60s definition of the elementary constituents of the universe as elementary entities is still accepted in many circles. In spite of the fact that the quantum-mechanical theory of elementary particles, formulated in three basic decades, has been constructed, and it has been shown that a fundamental theory based on the very elementary particles it treats of can be formulated, this old definition is not adequate.
