A representative sample of 4,500 adolescents aged 15-17, including 1500 males and 3,000 females from each region was surveyed using structured diagnostic interview. The analysis showed that the patterns of alcohol use were highly different among the studied groups. Northern adolescents were more likely to start drinking before age 15, while Southern adolescents, with the exception of adolescents from the Podlasie region, were more likely to start drinking after age 15. The highest proportions of regular alcohol consumption were observed among adolescents from the Świętokrzyskie and Lublin regions. About 45% of adolescents from rural regions reported lifetime use of alcohol, compared to 25.9% of urban adolescents. The lowest rate of alcohol consumption was observed in individuals from Podlasie (27.4%), while the highest was noted among residents of Świętokrzyskie (43.1%). In the total sample, the mean age at onset of regular alcohol consumption (inclusive of those who had consumed alcohol in the past month) was 15.4 years, while a higher age was noted in the North compared to the South. Adolescents from urban areas were more likely to have developed their drinking pattern by age 15. In the total sample, 37.4% of adolescents reported their first drink at age 15 or younger.
